Digital vs. 35mm Film Photography: how to choose which is right for you

Shot on 35mm Film

Photography is probably one of the most subjective art mediums out there. And just like every style of art, there are different ways to capture and create the medium. Photographing your memories is no different.

Two approaches currently dominate the scene: digital photography and 35mm film photography. What this means is, either we’re shooting your photos with a DSLR camera (or mirrorless cameras- don’t ask), which is the default camera/ tool for professionals, OR, we’re shooting with a film camera, which are the OG cameras and way we used to photograph everything before the use of digital cameras was popularized sometime in the 90s.

Each way has its own unique characteristics, traits, looks and vibes. As a user of both, I’d love to show you the differences between the two to help you figure out which might be the top choice for your own memories (who knows, maybe you’ll even want a mix of both)!

Digital Photography

1. Polished and Pretty

  • Digital photography generally has a sharper and an overall more ‘polished’ look than film (this of course can depend on each photographer’s editing style but, think generally!)

  • Digital photography also allows us the ability to review our images instantly and ensures we can capture "the shot"- it definitely provides more comfort and reassurance in this way!

2. Safe and Secure

  • Professional photographers often use digital cameras with dual memory card slots, adding a layer of security to safeguard your precious moments in case anything were to happen **knock on wood**

  • Digital cameras nowadays have way more features and general capabilities that most consumer film cameras do not have. For example, I can be trigger happy with my digital camera to make sure I capture that first kiss moment vs. a film camera that does not have the same capability

  • Professional 35mm film cameras are generally no longer produced on a mass scale anymore. Meaning, if a film camera were to break or jam, a backup is not as easily replaced as a digital camera would be. Making sure your photographer has a backup of their camera, no matter the medium, is non-negotiable!

3. Consistency and Style:

  • Because digital images are more forgiving and flexible in terms of editing, every professional photographer has a unique style

  • Because we manually edit your digital images, as a collective, they tend to have a more cohesive look and overall style

    • For example, mine is aimed to look very moody yet vintage!

4. Predictability:

  • With digital photography, you have the advantage of viewing the image before and after capturing it, ensuring you achieve the shot you’re looking for.

  • Digital photography is ideal for those seeking specific images and a particular style for their wedding day as we can generally be more precise with digital cameras.

Film Photography:

1. Intentionality:

  • Film photography is a slower, more deliberate process, encouraging intentionality in each shot.

  • The nostalgic, grainy look of film photos often mirrors the imperfect beauty of memories. It really shows such authenticity for the moment.

2. Limited Exposures:

  • Film typically allows for only 24-36 images per roll, encouraging photographers to carefully compose and capture each frame.

  • The choice of 35mm film stock and camera greatly influences the unique look of each photograph. For example, the most used film stock by photographers is Kodak Portra 400 as it is known to work great for accurate skintones!

3. Variability and Uncertainty:

  • The look of film can vary based on factors such as film stock and the type of camera used, not to mention the lighting, location, weather, etc. etc.

  • The uncertainty of not knowing what the final photo looks like until the film is developed definitely adds an element of excitement and charm but can be one of dread for someone who doesn’t like surprises

4. Embracing Imperfections:

  • Film photography is ideal for those who appreciate and embrace imperfections in their images as well as those that truly love and appreciate the vintage vibes!

  • Perfect for capturing candid moments and evoking a nostalgic, timeless feel.+

Ultimately, the choice between digital and film photography all comes down to personal preference in aesthetic and the appearance you’re searching for in your photos. Digital photography may be for you if you’re looking for a more polished look, a sense of security, and a very specific style. On the other hand, film photography offers a slower, more intentional process with a unique, nostalgic charm- perfect for those who appreciate the imperfections and vintage feel.

All in all I say, you can’t go wrong with either! And if you can’t decide which to choose because you love both, well, lucky for you I can shoot both 😎

Kind Words

“We had never been to Vegas, and honestly, when we decided to renew our vows there it all felt a little overwhelming. However, that all changed once we found Cruz. She was so incredibly knowledgeable of the area, gave advice and helped us map out different options and gave us an idea of how different parts of the city were laid out. She was so kind and kept our vision and inspo at the forefront of the experience. Once the day came, it was completely effortless, and she made it so much fun while creating a comfortable environment. I’m so beyond happy we booked with Cruz, and hope we get to work with her again in the future!” -Brandi
