How to prepare for your wedding day photos
So you’re kind of nervous about getting your photos taken? I felt the same way going into my wedding day. I think we all do, no matter what the occasion is that calls for our photo to be taken.
But not to worry, my friends, I’ve got you. As the excitement builds for your big day, the idea of being in the spotlight might stir up some nerves. Still, with a few tips and wise words I’d like to share, hopefully, that stress will melt away as we continue to get closer to your big day.
Clear and open communication
First, be sure to speak with your photographer and let them know how you’re feeling about getting your wedding day photos taken. Sometimes even just sharing your nerves helps take a load off. Not only that, this opens communication with your photographer and maybe will help us figure out what exactly is making you nervous and how we can best approach this together. When you open this line of communication, you create a space where you and your photographer can become more familiar and comfortable, share your preferences, and discuss any must-have shots or concerns. Setting expectations on both sides is equally important. Share if you’ve ever had your photos taken before, what are you looking for in terms of your photos, style, posing? Even share what insecurities you may have so that your photographer can do their best to keep that in mind while working. Photographers are not psychic but we are mindful. Share it all! Transparency, familiarity, and honesty will help build that bond and who knows, by the time the wedding day gets here, it may even feel like your best budd is photographing you and not some random stranger you found on the internet!
Allow for flexible scheduling
When it comes to scheduling, give yourself some breathing room. Avoid a jam-packed timeline and allow for breaks between events to freshen up and savor the moment. If you’re not sure what that might look like, ask your photographer for their input on the timeline and communicate that as well because you want to not only ensure that you have enough time at each location, but you want to ensure that you’re giving yourselves time to get the results you want. For example, if you’re looking for quick, posed hits then that can certainly be achieved in a shorter time frame because we know what we want. But if you’re looking for those candid, raw moments, then you have to allow the time to create them and let them unfold because they are unplanned moments, after all. You also don’t want to cram a lot of events into a small timeline so as to not feel flustered or like you’re at one giant photoshoot! This is your wedding day, take the time to actually enjoy it (it makes for better, organic photos, too!).
Embrace the moment
Remember, perfect is overrated. Embrace imperfections, be present in the moment, the time, the place with your partner, and let your photographer capture the authentic, messy, beautiful you (ESPECIALLY if you’re looking for those organic, candid, RAW moments)- even if that means having a double chin for a few frames. It’s not the end of the world, I promise not all of your photos will be like this. But embrace the true moments of your day and expect to have REAL moments in your gallery, not a Pinterest board.
Sneak away for a quiet moment – whether it's a stolen kiss or just a deep breath – take time to soak in the day, as it's all about you two. Lastly, have fun! Laugh, dance, keep the movement flowing and enjoy the day because a genuine smile beats a practiced one every time. Trust me. You’ll want to remember those moments.
Keep it moving
If there’s anything to remember on your wedding day, it’s this: keep on moving. Movement is everything, especially if you’re really wanting those candid, more organic moments to reflect back on your big day. As your photographer, of course, I will give you prompts to get you moving but it takes two to tango (aka, the effort is 100% needed from both of you and me to create these wonderful moments to capture!). This is the time to get out of your box and comfort zone, this is the time to love on your partner, to have fun, be silly with each other (even if PDA isn’t quite your thing, which I get, it will be a little bit on this day). Keep it moving 🖤
Trust your photographer
Trusting your wedding photographer is essential for capturing the genuine moments and emotions of your special day. A skilled and trusted photographer not only has the technical expertise but also understands the significance of each moment, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy the celebration. Building a strong rapport through open communication ensures that your photographer aligns with your vision, resulting in a collection of photos that authentically reflects the unique spirit of your wedding day. So don’t be afraid, your photos will look amazing- your day will be too 🖤

“I cannot say enough good things about or recommend Cruz enough! Cruz photographed on film our courthouse elopement and a small reception we had in Vegas. The photos exceeded our expectations! They are aesthetically stunning and tell a story that will allow us to relive our special days.
Cruz was so kind, genuine, and warm throughout the entire process. My husband especially isn’t comfortable in front of a camera, and Cruz gave us gentle cues and ideas while she photographed us. We were able to loosen up and have fun. She is also a perfect professional, very communicative and responsive over email throughout the entire process.
It was such a pleasure to have Cruz capture our wedding on film. She is so talented!”Brittany & Cory
